Introduction to Pack Burro Racing
There is an Explanation!
The prospector and his trusting friend and beast of burden, the donkey, loaded with gold pan, pick, shovel and grubstake, combed the mountainsides in many western states in the mid-1800s trying to make a living. They were a colorful lot.

Pack burro racing keeps alive that scenario of the miner's excitement and rush to get off the mountain to register a claim at the assay office in town before the next guy, who had no problem claim jumping.
Updated for the late 20th and early 21st century, of course, and now a sport, burro racing still involves a person running beside a burro loaded with a pack saddle and mining gear along mountain trails and roads. The skill, as ever, is covering ground while collaborating and negotiating with an animal who has its own system of rights.
