Kids go to the Dogs
by Cara Doyle
While adults are busy with llamas and burros in Fairplay, area children have the opportunity to compete in the annual Kiddies Pack Dog Race in Alma, just six miles north of Fairplay.

The brain child of Carol Davis and Al Baumeister, the annual event gives kids the chance to participate in a "mini" version of the famous World Championship Pack Burro Race.
The twist? Kids run with their favorite four-legged pooch. And, like the professional runners, they also have some pretty challenging requirements.
Race rules include:
1. All dogs must be on leashes and under control of the racers.
2. Each dog must be equipped with a pack containing a pick, an apple and a peanut butter sandwich (jelly optional), except in the case of half a dog, when half a sandwich will do.
3. No racer may ride his/her dog, but if he/she has shorter legs than the runner, it's OK to carry him/her. However, the dog must cross the start and finish lines on all fours.
4. Odds-making is strictly prohibited.
5. If a dog falls in love at the race, resulting progeny remains the responsibility of the racers. Puppies, no matter how adorable, may not be left on the doorstep of race committee members.
